The benefits of burning a candle outdoors

The gentle flicker of a candle on a nice evening completely transforms your outdoor area. It calms things down, turning your patio or poolside into a cozy extension of your home. Enjoying candles in the great outdoors isn’t just a trend, it actually brings about other benefits.

However, if you’re hoping for the same luxurious experience as when you burn candles indoors, calm your jets! Outside, wind reeks havoc on fragrance. Those great aromas don’t linger or envelop as they do inside. Wax responds differently during the burn process. The wick, or wicks, struggle. But fear not! With the right approach, you can achieve that wonderful glow and enjoy great fragrances as well.

Some Other Benefits

Using candles outdoors is more than just setting a mood and enjoying your favorite fragrance. Other benefits include:

  1. Keep the bugs away
    1. Everyone is familiar with Citronella Candles. Citronella is a naturally occurring oil that masks odors that insects are attracted to. Therefore, it acts as a repellant.
    2. While Citronella works well, it has an aroma that people seem to either Love or Hate. The Lighthouse Candle Factory has BETTER alternatives to Citronella. Our Lemongrass fragrance oil is made exclusively for us. It works just as well as Citronella when it come to repelling mosquitos and other insects. We also utilize our Lemongrass oil in our exclusive Lemondrop Odor Be Gone (OBG) fragrance. Why is it Better than Citronella? Quite simply, it doesn’t stink!
  2. Candles used outdoors enhance the lighting at your evening/nighttime events.
  3. Candles enhance the décor and ambiance of your outdoor area.

Weather Factors Impact Candle Performance
  • High ambient temperatures and direct sunlight might soften candle wax before the candle is used. Try to keep the candle in a shady area, or indoors, until you are ready to light it.
  • Just like indoors, drafts effect the way a candle burns. If it is breezy the candle could experience sputtering, tunneling, and/or extinguishment.
  • Excessive humidity can result in a weak or non-existent burn.
Tips for Enjoying Candles Outdoors

To ensure a great outdoor experience, provide some shelter for your candles! Consider using a lantern or anything that can protect the flame and keep it consistent. If you notice the flame leaning, gently rotate the candle a ¼ turn every 30 minutes to encourage an even burn.

  • Opt for placement on raised surfaces like tables, ledges, or durable stands.
  • Keep candles away from walkways or stairs to prevent accidents.
  • Trim the wicks prior to lighting.
  • Light candles 30–45 minutes prior to  your event to allow a good melt pool to form.
  • Stick to one fragrance.
  • Extinguish candles before the festivities wind down.

Spice up your outdoor gatherings with the cozy charm of candles—your guests will appreciate the thoughtfulness, and you’ll create the perfect ambiance for memorable nights!
