The Lighthouse Candle Factory (LHCF) was founded in 1997 by Betty Burger, affectionately known to everyone as “Miss Betty.” Miss Betty was frustrated with the quality of most well-known store bought candles. For four (4) years prior to founding LHCF, Miss Betty set out to create a better product. After getting off work from her regular job, she worked at night in her spare bedroom perfecting the most even-burning, most fragrant and longest lasting candle available anywhere. From her custom wax blend to her proprietary multi-pour process, combined with using only the highest quality fragrance oils, Miss Betty created what our customers call “The Perfect Candle.” A true pioneer in the candle industry, Miss Betty later branched out into offering oils and scented sprays with an additive she developed called Odor Be Gone (OBG) that are exclusive to The Lighthouse Candle Factory.
Sadly, Miss Betty passed away unexpectedly in February of 2023. Rebecca Overman, a Kernersville native and long-time customer of The Lighthouse Candle Factory, could not fathom the products that Miss Betty created not being available anymore. With a pledge to continue Miss Betty’s legacy, Rebecca opened the doors again on April 6, 2023. Rebecca and the The Lighthouse Candle Factory team are committed to continue making the best candles, tarts, melts, oils, sprays, car hangers (diffusers) and smelly jellies on the planet!
The Lighthouse Candle Factory is a small, family-operated business. The LHCF Team is kept small on purpose to protect the closely guarded proprietary processes and materials used to produce our unique products. This way we are able to ensure that a tremendous amount of love and attention goes into the production of all of our handmade products. The only machinery found in our factory? The heaters that melt the wax! EVERYTHING is done by hand!!
The LHCF Strategy is as simple as it gets: Produce a unique product that out-performs everything else on the market, and keep it competitively priced. Do not cut corners, period. Approach everything you do with passion and put a lot of love in what you make. If you do these things, you will always have a loyal following!
Owner
Rebecca is a native of Kernersville, NC. With an undergraduate degree from Western Carolina University and a Masters from Campbell University, Rebecca works full-time in the Emergency Medicine Clinical Research field at a major local Emergency Department. She played club, high school and collegiate soccer from the age of 6. She grew up coming into The Lighthouse Candle Factory to see Miss Betty after her soccer games on Saturday’s.
Rebecca has enjoyed arts & crafts since she was old enough to color with crayons. As a child/teenager, she was constantly making “pretty” handmade things to decorate her room, house, and to give away as gifts. She has always enjoyed bringing joy to others through her creations.
Rebecca’s philosophy is very simple: Quality Before Quantity! She says “Miss Betty worked extremely hard to develop a superior candle that is unique from the rest. All of the credit goes to Miss Betty. I pledged to her husband after she passed away that we would continue Miss Betty’s legacy. We are going to continue to make our products Miss Betty’s way until we can’t anymore. It costs a lot more to make them her way, but, if it gets to the point we have to cut quality to stay in business; we will shut the doors! We may make some new fragrances, some new vessels, some new products, but it will be done to Miss Betty’s standards or it won’t be done.”
After four (4) years of research developing her proprietary wax blend, and multi-pour process, Ms. Betty launched The Lighthouse Candle Factory!
Ms. Betty created and launched her revolutionary Odor Be Gone (OBG) additive that changed everything!
Rebecca Overman bought the company after Ms. Betty’s untimely passing. Fortunately, Betty’s husband, Mr. Jim, was able to teach Rebecca, her Mom, and her Dad how to make candles “Ms. Betty’s way!”
The Lighthouse Candle Factory was honored to receive 2nd Place for the Coolest Thing Made in North Carolina.
While we have expanded from 62 fragrances to 125, and introduced several new products, we continue to do it Ms. Betty’s way. Only 4 people know the recipe and process!

This sprays very well at the beach and walking your dog at night (especially with a flashlight).
